Financial services and banking

How does a regional mutual outgrow national banks online?

By planning regionally first. We built a branch-radius digital acquisition strategy for Darlington Building Society, segmented savers into three real cohorts and optimised on live data. Between September 2024 and June 2025, paid activity returned more than 1,000 to 1 on ad spend, and the work won Best Professional & Financial Services Campaign at the Prolific North Marketing Awards 2025.

01

The brief

Darlington Building Society opened its online savings platform to new members in 2024. Existing members had access before that, so the wider rollout was a step change in the Society's digital proposition, not a launch. High-street banks were continuing to close branches, and the Society needed to compete with national providers for savers while raising digital visibility across its regional footprint.

The Society set itself a stretching target of a +525% increase in online deposit growth, to be delivered on a modest marketing budget and within a short timeframe.

02

What we planned

Using audience, media and CACI insight, we planned against three cohorts rather than one generic saver. These were 55+ savers seeking stability, under-30s building early saving habits and families saving for children or future milestones. Each group had its own messaging and its own channel weighting.

Digital activity was planned around branch communities, so the Society's regional identity stayed at the heart of the campaign. Concentrating spend this way also supported in-branch engagement at a point when high-street presence across the sector was shrinking.

03

How it ran

Four channels ran together against one funnel, with digital display for brand trust and awareness, paid social with demographic-specific messaging, paid search capturing high-intent savers researching competitive rates and retargeting to convert warm, engaged audiences. We tested brand-led and product-led creative.

Live data informed continual refinement rather than a quarterly review. 65+ savers on mobile emerged as the most responsive audience, and Google Analytics event tracking provided full attribution to online applications and branch referrals, so every optimisation decision traced to a saver taking action.

Outcome

A community mutual competing on national terms

Insight-driven strategy, regional-first planning and hyper-local execution helped a community-focused financial provider outperform national competitors. The campaign delivered exponential digital growth while reinforcing Darlington Building Society's role as a trusted, values-led regional mutual.

Working with Route has delivered real impact for Darlington Building Society. They quickly understood that our strength lies in community, and built a campaign that delivered impressive results while staying true to our purpose as a member-first building society. What stood out for me was their ability to take a modest budget and turn it into something that drove genuine value... helping us connect with both our traditional savers and a new generation of members.

Importantly, this wasn't just about short-term sales or product promotion. Route helped us focus on brand building for long-term member engagement and profitability - a real shift for us, and one that's already paying off through strong organic growth. They didn't just deliver a marketing campaign; they helped us prove that a community-focused challenger can compete with the biggest names in banking, without ever losing sight of who we are.
