How do you turn awareness into members who renew?
By treating acquisition, renewal and lapsed win-back as one connected journey rather than three separate campaigns. Route plans and buys media for membership and arts organisations, targeting the audiences most likely to join, and measuring sign-ups and renewals so the budget follows the members who stay.
Who this is for
Membership bodies, professional societies, arts organisations and subscription services that need to grow a base and keep it. If your year turns on join rates, renewals and reactivating lapsed members, these are the outcomes we plan towards.
Why Route
Because a member is worth far more than a first sign-up, the media should reflect lifetime value, not one-off cost. We plan the full journey, target the audiences most likely to commit, and report on join, renewal and win-back rather than reach alone.
How we plan for membership organisations
We start with the member journey. Acquisition media brings the right prospects in through paid search, paid social and display; renewal and retention activity keeps existing members engaged; and lapsed win-back reaches people who have drifted away. We flight budget to the moments that matter - renewal windows, campaign launches, event calendars - and measure sign-ups, account creations and repeat engagement so spend can be judged on the members it produces.
Two live examples show the pattern. For The Union, the international society against tuberculosis and lung disease, we ran integrated digital campaigns that brought in participants at more than four times the membership number and won Best Digital Marketing Campaign, Third Sector at the Northern Digital Awards 2022. For Dance City, we ran Google Search, Performance Max and Grant activity in which 21% of sales came from newly created accounts, against a target of 20%, at a return of more than 24 times the spend - the account-holder relationship that sits at the heart of any membership model.

Can you help with renewals as well as new members?
Yes. We plan acquisition, renewal and lapsed win-back as one connected programme, because retaining and reactivating members is usually more cost-efficient than only chasing new sign-ups, and the media should reflect that balance.
How do you measure whether membership marketing is working?
We measure the outcomes that matter to a membership model, such as sign-ups, account creations, renewals and repeat engagement, rather than reach alone, and set up tracking so those numbers are visible in your own accounts.
We have a small marketing budget. Can you still help?
Yes. Much of our arts and third-sector work runs on lean budgets, using precise targeting and grant funding where eligible to make limited spending go further. The aim is efficiency, not scale for its own sake.
Do you understand the seasonal nature of membership?
We plan around your calendar - renewal windows, event seasons and campaign launches - so the budget concentrates when prospects and members are most likely to act rather than spreading evenly across the year.
