Podcast advertising has evolved from a niche channel into an established part of the modern media mix. Once associated mainly with challenger and direct-to-consumer brands, it now attracts investment across all sectors, including financial services, retail, automotive and technology.

For media planners, podcasts offer access to engaged audiences in trusted environments, including moments when people are away from screens. As with any channel, however, their effectiveness depends on understanding how they fit into a wider media strategy.

Podcast audiences continue to grow

Podcast listening is now firmly established in the UK. Statista estimates that 15.5 million people listened to podcasts each month during 2025, while Edison Research found that almost seven in ten UK adults have listened to a podcast and 30% listen every week.

The depth of this engagement is particularly valuable. According to the Press Gazette, the BBC estimates that listeners spend an average of five hours and 27 minutes with podcasts each week, often incorporating them into commutes, exercise and household routines. This provides advertisers with repeated opportunities to reach audiences within environments they have actively chosen.

Podcast content has also become increasingly diverse. Alongside popular genres such as news, entertainment and comedy, specialist shows now serve almost every interest and profession. Advertisers can therefore reach relevant, engaged communities rather than simply selecting the shows with the largest audiences – there is enough scale to reach very specific target audiences.

Podcasts are evolving beyond audio

Many leading podcasts are now filmed and distributed across YouTube and other video platforms, with audiences following them much like television series.

YouTube attracts more than one billion monthly podcast viewers globally, according to eMarketer. Viewers also streamed more than 700 million hours of podcast content on television screens during October 2025 alone. The shift is especially pronounced among younger audiences, with industry research from YouGov suggesting that 90% of Gen Z podcast consumers engage with video podcasts.

This creates two distinct advertising opportunities. Audio reaches people while they are commuting, exercising or moving through their day. Video podcasts reach audiences who have consciously chosen to watch through a TV, laptop or mobile device.

These environments require different creative approaches. As the boundaries between podcasts, Connected TV and broadcaster video-on-demand continue to blur, advertisers should consider how each can contribute to the wider media campaign.

Trust remains one of podcast advertising’s greatest strengths

The context in which someone encounters an ad message influences how credible and effective it feels. Podcast listeners actively choose their content and often spend hours with the same presenters, creating relationships built on familiarity and trust.

Well-integrated advertising can therefore feel like a natural part of the conversation rather than an interruption. This is particularly true of host-read advertising: Edison Research found that 61% of weekly podcast listeners are more likely to consider a product when it is recommended by a podcast host.

This campaign approach benefits from the credibility hosts have already established with their audiences, helping recommendations feel more authentic than many conventional ad treatments.

Choice creates a better advertising experience

Because podcasts are consumed on demand, listeners have greater control over their experience. Rather than reducing effectiveness, this can contribute to a more positive perception of the advertising.

Ofcom’s Audio Report 2025 found that 40% of people in the UK consider podcast advertising less intrusive than advertising in other media. Listeners often accept it as part of supporting content they have chosen to consume.

Podcast effectiveness should not therefore be measured solely by immediate clicks or whether every second of an ad is heard. Repeated exposure (frequency) in a trusted environment can build awareness and familiarity that influence later audience behaviour.

Audience behaviour should shape podcast planning

Effective podcast advertising begins with understanding who is listening, what interests them and how they consume the content.

Listening habits vary between generations. Edison Podcast Metrics UK found that Gen Z audiences are more likely to consume podcasts while exercising, eating or relaxing. Generation X listeners often incorporate them into household routines, while Baby Boomers frequently listen during commutes or chores.

Content also shapes the advertising environment. A comedy podcast creates a different relationship with its audience from a news or current affairs programme. These distinctions should guide show selection, placement, creative messaging and the choice between audio and video.

Podcast advertising works best as part of an integrated media strategy

Podcast advertising is particularly powerful when it is used in combination with other channels. Effective media planning is rarely about finding one platform that can meet every objective; it is about reaching audiences in different moments and allowing channels to reinforce messaging and build up collective impact.

Research from Acast found that adding podcasts to wider campaigns can improve overall effectiveness by between 21% and 40%. Advertiser investment reflects this potential: IAB UK reported that UK podcast advertising spend reached £90 million in 2024, an increase of 8% year on year.

Research tells us that podcasts work well alongside paid social, digital display, out-of-home and TV advertising. While screen-based media reaches people when they are actively viewing content, audio podcasts can connect with them when visual advertising cannot. Video podcasts also provide a natural bridge between traditional audio and Connected TV.
